Jonathan Befriends David

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.1As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.1Now it came about when he had finished speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as himself.1And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.1When David had finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan committed himself to David, and loved him as much as he loved himself.
From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family.2And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house.2Saul took him that day and did not let him return to his father's house.2And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.2Saul kept David with him from that day on and did not let him return to his father's house.
And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.3Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.3Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.3Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.3Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as much as himself.
Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.4And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.4Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, including his sword and his bow and his belt.4And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.4Then Jonathan removed the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his military tunic, his sword, his bow, and his belt.

Saul Envies David

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
Whatever mission Saul sent him on, David was so successful that Saul gave him a high rank in the army. This pleased all the troops, and Saul's officers as well.5And David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war. And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.5So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and prospered; and Saul set him over the men of war. And it was pleasing in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul's servants.5And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.5David marched out with the army and was successful in everything Saul sent him to do. Saul put him in command of the soldiers, which pleased all the people and Saul's servants as well.
When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with timbrels and lyres.6As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments.6It happened as they were coming, when David returned from killing the Philistine, that the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy and with musical instruments.6And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.6As the troops were coming back, when David was returning from killing the Philistine, the women came out from all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul, singing and dancing with tambourines, with shouts of joy, and with three-stringed instruments.
As they danced, they sang: "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands."7And the women sang to one another as they celebrated, “Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”7The women sang as they played, and said, "Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands."7And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.7As they celebrated, the women sang: Saul has killed his thousands, but David his tens of thousands.
Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. "They have credited David with tens of thousands," he thought, "but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?"8And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?”8Then Saul became very angry, for this saying displeased him; and he said, "They have ascribed to David ten thousands, but to me they have ascribed thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?"8And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?8Saul was furious and resented this song. "They credited tens of thousands to David," he complained, "but they only credited me with thousands. What more can he have but the kingdom?"

And from that time on Saul kept a close eye on David.9And Saul eyed David from that day on.9Saul looked at David with suspicion from that day on.9And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.9So Saul watched David jealously from that day forward.
The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully on Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David was playing the lyre, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand10The next day a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand.10Now it came about on the next day that an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul, and he raved in the midst of the house, while David was playing the harp with his hand, as usual; and a spear was in Saul's hand.10And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.10The next day an evil spirit sent from God took control of Saul, and he began to rave inside the palace. David was playing the lyre as usual, but Saul was holding a spear,
and he hurled it, saying to himself, "I'll pin David to the wall." But David eluded him twice.11And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David evaded him twice.11Saul hurled the spear for he thought, "I will pin David to the wall." But David escaped from his presence twice.11And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.11and he threw it, thinking, "I'll pin David to the wall." But David got away from him twice.
Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had departed from Saul.12Saul was afraid of David because the LORD was with him but had departed from Saul.12Now Saul was afraid of David, for the LORD was with him but had departed from Saul.12And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.12Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had left Saul.
So he sent David away from him and gave him command over a thousand men, and David led the troops in their campaigns.13So Saul removed him from his presence and made him a commander of a thousand. And he went out and came in before the people.13Therefore Saul removed him from his presence and appointed him as his commander of a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.13Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.13Therefore, Saul reassigned David and made him commander over 1,000 men. David led the troops

In everything he did he had great success, because the LORD was with him.14And David had success in all his undertakings, for the LORD was with him.14David was prospering in all his ways for the LORD was with him.14And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.14and continued to be successful in all his activities because the LORD was with him.
When Saul saw how successful he was, he was afraid of him.15And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him.15When Saul saw that he was prospering greatly, he dreaded him.15Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.15When Saul observed that David was very successful, he dreaded him.
But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he led them in their campaigns.16But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them.16But all Israel and Judah loved David, and he went out and came in before them.16But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.16But all Israel and Judah loved David because he was leading their troops.

David Marries Michal

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
Saul said to David, "Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage; only serve me bravely and fight the battles of the LORD." For Saul said to himself, "I will not raise a hand against him. Let the Philistines do that!"17Then Saul said to David, “Here is my elder daughter Merab. I will give her to you for a wife. Only be valiant for me and fight the LORD’s battles.” For Saul thought, “Let not my hand be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”17Then Saul said to David, "Here is my older daughter Merab; I will give her to you as a wife, only be a valiant man for me and fight the LORD'S battles." For Saul thought, "My hand shall not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him."17And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD'S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.17Saul told David, "Here is my oldest daughter Merab. I'll give her to you as a wife, if you will be a warrior for me and fight the LORD's battles." But Saul was thinking, "My hand doesn't need to be against him; let the hand of the Philistines be against him."
But David said to Saul, "Who am I, and what is my family or my clan in Israel, that I should become the king's son-in-law?"18And David said to Saul, “Who am I, and who are my relatives, my father’s clan in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?”18But David said to Saul, "Who am I, and what is my life or my father's family in Israel, that I should be the king's son-in-law?"18And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?18Then David responded, "Who am I, and what is my family or my father's clan in Israel that I should become the king's son-in-law?"
So when the time came for Merab, Saul's daughter, to be given to David, she was given in marriage to Adriel of Meholah.19But at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David, she was given to Adriel the Meholathite for a wife.19So it came about at the time when Merab, Saul's daughter, should have been given to David, that she was given to Adriel the Meholathite for a wife.19But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.19When it was time to give Saul's daughter Merab to David, she was given to Adriel the Meholathite as a wife.
Now Saul's daughter Michal was in love with David, and when they told Saul about it, he was pleased.20Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David. And they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.20Now Michal, Saul's daughter, loved David. When they told Saul, the thing was agreeable to him.20And Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.20Now Saul's daughter Michal loved David, and when it was reported to Saul, it pleased him.

"I will give her to him," he thought, "so that she may be a snare to him and so that the hand of the Philistines may be against him." So Saul said to David, "Now you have a second opportunity to become my son-in-law."21Saul thought, “Let me give her to him, that she may be a snare for him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David a second time, “You shall now be my son-in-law.”21Saul thought, "I will give her to him that she may become a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him." Therefore Saul said to David, "For a second time you may be my son-in-law today."21And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain.21"I'll give her to him," Saul thought. "She'll be a trap for him, and the hand of the Philistines will be against him." So Saul said to David a second time, "You can now be my son-in-law."
Then Saul ordered his attendants: "Speak to David privately and say, 'Look, the king likes you, and his attendants all love you; now become his son-in-law.'"22And Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David in private and say, ‘Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. Now then become the king’s son-in-law.’”22Then Saul commanded his servants, "Speak to David secretly, saying, 'Behold, the king delights in you, and all his servants love you; now therefore, become the king's son-in-law.'"22And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's son in law.22Saul then ordered his servants, "Speak to David in private and tell him, 'Look, the king is pleased with you, and all his servants love you. Therefore, you should become the king's son-in-law.'"
They repeated these words to David. But David said, "Do you think it is a small matter to become the king's son-in-law? I'm only a poor man and little known."23And Saul’s servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, “Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king’s son-in-law, since I am a poor man and have no reputation?”23So Saul's servants spoke these words to David. But David said, "Is it trivial in your sight to become the king's son-in-law, since I am a poor man and lightly esteemed?"23And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?23Saul's servants reported these words directly to David, but he replied, "Is it trivial in your sight to become the king's son-in-law? I am a poor man who is common."
When Saul's servants told him what David had said,24And the servants of Saul told him, “Thus and so did David speak.”24The servants of Saul reported to him according to these words which David spoke.24And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.24The servants reported back to Saul, "These are the words David spoke."
Saul replied, "Say to David, 'The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies.'" Saul's plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines.25Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king’s enemies.’” Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.25Saul then said, "Thus you shall say to David, 'The king does not desire any dowry except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to take vengeance on the king's enemies.'" Now Saul planned to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.25And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.25Then Saul replied, "Say this to David: 'The king desires no other bride-price except 100 Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies.'" Actually, Saul intended to cause David's death at the hands of the Philistines.

When the attendants told David these things, he was pleased to become the king's son-in-law. So before the allotted time elapsed,26And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law. Before the time had expired,26When his servants told David these words, it pleased David to become the king's son-in-law. Before the days had expired26And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son in law: and the days were not expired.26When the servants reported these terms to David, he was pleased to become the king's son-in-law. Before the wedding day arrived,
David took his men with him and went out and killed two hundred Philistines and brought back their foreskins. They counted out the full number to the king so that David might become the king's son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage.27David arose and went, along with his men, and killed two hundred of the Philistines. And David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. And Saul gave him his daughter Michal for a wife.27David rose up and went, he and his men, and struck down two hundred men among the Philistines. Then David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might become the king's son-in-law. So Saul gave him Michal his daughter for a wife.27Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.27David and his men went out and killed 200 Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented them as full payment to the king to become his son-in-law. Then Saul gave his daughter Michal to David as his wife.
When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David,28But when Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him,28When Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal, Saul's daughter, loved him,28And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal Saul's daughter loved him.28Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved him,
Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days.29Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David’s enemy continually.29then Saul was even more afraid of David. Thus Saul was David's enemy continually.29And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's enemy continually.29and he became even more afraid of David. As a result, Saul was David's enemy from then on.
The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle, and as often as they did, David met with more success than the rest of Saul's officers, and his name became well known.30Then the commanders of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed.30Then the commanders of the Philistines went out to battle, and it happened as often as they went out, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul. So his name was highly esteemed.30Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.30Every time the Philistine commanders came out to fight, David was more successful than all of Saul's officers. So his name became well known.
