War against Remaining Canaanites

(Joshua 13:1-7)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, "Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Canaanites?"1After the death of Joshua, the people of Israel inquired of the LORD, “Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”1Now it came about after the death of Joshua that the sons of Israel inquired of the LORD, saying, "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?"1Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?1After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the LORD, "Who will be the first to fight for us against the Canaanites?"
The LORD answered, "Judah shall go up; I have given the land into their hands."2The LORD said, “Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.”2The LORD said, "Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand."2And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.2The LORD answered, "Judah is to go. I have handed the land over to him."
The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites, "Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours." So the Simeonites went with them.3And Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites. And I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you.” So Simeon went with him.3Then Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into the territory allotted me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I in turn will go with you into the territory allotted you." So Simeon went with him.3And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.3Judah said to his brother Simeon, "Come with me to my territory, and let us fight against the Canaanites. I will also go with you to your territory." So Simeon went with him.
When Judah attacked, the LORD gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.4Then Judah went up and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they defeated 10,000 of them at Bezek.4Judah went up, and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hands, and they defeated ten thousand men at Bezek.4And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.4When Judah attacked, the LORD handed the Canaanites and Perizzites over to them. They struck down 10,000 men in Bezek.

It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites.5They found Adoni-bezek at Bezek and fought against him and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.5They found Adoni-bezek in Bezek and fought against him, and they defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.5And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.5They found Adoni-bezek in Bezek, fought against him, and struck down the Canaanites and Perizzites.
Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.6Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and his big toes.6But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.6But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.6When Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
Then Adoni-Bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.7And Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table. As I have done, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.7Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to gather up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me." So they brought him to Jerusalem and he died there.7And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.7Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table. God has repaid me for what I have done." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.8And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire.8Then the sons of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire.8Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.8The men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher.11Then from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir (now the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher).11And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:11From there they marched against the residents of Debir (Debir was formerly named Kiriath-sepher).
And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher."12And Caleb said, “He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give him Achsah my daughter for a wife.”12And Caleb said, "The one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will even give him my daughter Achsah for a wife."12And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.12Caleb said, "Whoever strikes down and captures Kiriath-sepher, I will give my daughter Achsah to him as a wife."
Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.13And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter for a wife.13Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, captured it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah for a wife.13And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.13So Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's youngest brother, captured it, and Caleb gave his daughter Achsah to him as his wife.
One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What can I do for you?"14When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?”14Then it came about when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. Then she alighted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, "What do you want?"14And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?14When she arrived, she persuaded Othniel to ask her father for a field. As she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What do you want?"

She replied, "Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water." So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.15She said to him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.” And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.15She said to him, "Give me a blessing, since you have given me the land of the Negev, give me also springs of water." So Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.15And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.15She answered him, "Give me a blessing. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of water also." So Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.
The descendants of Moses' father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.16And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad, and they went and settled with the people.16The descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up from the city of palms with the sons of Judah, to the wilderness of Judah which is in the south of Arad; and they went and lived with the people.16And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.16The descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, had gone up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of Judah, which was in the Negev of Arad. They went to live among the people.
Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed the city. Therefore it was called Hormah.17And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath and devoted it to destruction. So the name of the city was called Hormah.17Then Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they struck the Canaanites living in Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called Hormah.17And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.17Judah went with his brother Simeon, struck the Canaanites who were living in Zephath, and completely destroyed the town. So they named the town Hormah.
Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron--each city with its territory.18Judah also captured Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.18And Judah took Gaza with its territory and Ashkelon with its territory and Ekron with its territory.18Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.18Judah captured Gaza and its territory, Ashkelon and its territory, and Ekron and its territory.
The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron.19And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had chariots of iron.19Now the LORD was with Judah, and they took possession of the hill country; but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley because they had iron chariots.19And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.19The LORD was with Judah and enabled them to take possession of the hill country, but they could not drive out the people who were living in the valley because those people had iron chariots.

As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak.20And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said. And he drove out from it the three sons of Anak.20Then they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had promised; and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak.20And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.20Judah gave Hebron to Caleb, just as Moses had promised. Then Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak who lived there.
The Benjamites, however, did not drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.21But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.21But the sons of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have lived with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.21And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.21At the same time the Benjaminites did not drive out the Jebusites who were living in Jerusalem. The Jebusites have lived among the Benjaminites in Jerusalem to this day.
Now the tribes of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them.22The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.22Likewise the house of Joseph went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.22And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them.22The house of Joseph also attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them.
When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz),23And the house of Joseph scouted out Bethel. (Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.)23The house of Joseph spied out Bethel (now the name of the city was formerly Luz).23And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)23They sent spies to Bethel (the town was formerly named Luz).
the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, "Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well."24And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, “Please show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you.”24The spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, "Please show us the entrance to the city and we will treat you kindly."24And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.24The spies saw a man coming out of the town and said to him, "Please show us how to get into town, and we will treat you well."

So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family.25And he showed them the way into the city. And they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go.25So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go free.25And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.25When he showed them the way into the town, they put the town to the sword but released the man and his entire family.
He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day.26And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city and called its name Luz. That is its name to this day.26The man went into the land of the Hittites and built a city and named it Luz which is its name to this day.26And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.26Then the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a town, and named it Luz. That is its name to this day.

But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land.27Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land.27But Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; so the Canaanites persisted in living in that land.27Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.27At that time Manasseh failed to take possession of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the residents of Dor and its villages, or the residents of Ibleam and its villages, or the residents of Megiddo and its villages; the Canaanites refused to leave this land.
When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.28When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely.28It came about when Israel became strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but they did not drive them out completely.28And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.28When Israel became stronger, they made the Canaanites serve as forced labor but never drove them out completely.
Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.29And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.29Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who were living in Gezer; so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.29Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.29At that time Ephraim failed to drive out the Canaanites who were living in Gezer, so the Canaanites have lived among them in Gezer.
Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor.30Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but became subject to forced labor.30Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites lived among them and became subject to forced labor.30Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.30Zebulun failed to drive out the residents of Kitron or the residents of Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them and served as forced labor.

Nor did Asher drive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Akzib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob.31Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob,31Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob.31Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:31Asher failed to drive out the residents of Acco or of Sidon, or Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob.
The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out.32so the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out.32So the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.32But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.32The Asherites lived among the Canaanites who were living in the land, because they failed to drive them out.
Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them.33Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, so they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.33Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; and the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath became forced labor for them.33Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.33Naphtali did not drive out the residents of Beth-shemesh or the residents of Beth-anath. They lived among the Canaanites who were living in the land, but the residents of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath served as their forced labor.
The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.34The Amorites pressed the people of Dan back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain.34Then the Amorites forced the sons of Dan into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the valley;34And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:34The Amorites forced the Danites into the hill country and did not allow them to go down into the valley.
And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor.35The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor.35yet the Amorites persisted in living in Mount Heres, in Aijalon and in Shaalbim; but when the power of the house of Joseph grew strong, they became forced labor.35But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.35The Amorites refused to leave Har-heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim. When the house of Joseph got the upper hand, the Amorites were made to serve as forced labor.
The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond.36And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.36The border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.36And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.36The territory of the Amorites extended from the Ascent of Akrabbim, that is from Sela upward.
